Gratitude

I was born earlier than you
by many years
but I followed you into this incarnation
clothed anew, how could you recognize me?
and I waited
even ’til my hair was greyed
until half my life was over

the way you looked
as a Queen fit for King Cyrus
maybe your spirit recalled
maybe it did not
how many subjects are so lucky?
to be recognized by their queen
it does not matter
maybe you thought me mad,
think me mad
maybe you know better

in my time before the womb
I prayed to see you once again
God said “I will let you see her, but only for a moment”
and I did see you
after all these years
I cannot keep you,
cannot approach without your skittish withdrawal
for to you I am an odd stranger

So God kept his promise
