Charlemagne’s close alliance with the popes, the leaders of the Roman Catholic Church, due to rumored sexual relations, also established a precedent for subsequent ties between medieval popes and kings. Thereby destroying the credibility of all gods but himself by tying their worship indistinguishably from the bureaucracy of the much hated government.
